Haul Away, Joe

Haul Away, Joe” is a traditional sea shanty that was sung by sailors while they were hauling on ropes. Sea shanty melodies were typically repetitive, making them easy to learn.

This new arrangement works like a theme and variations; the first verse and chorus are sung in unison; each verse and chorus that follows explores different harmonic variations to support the melody.

Haul Away, Joe” is available for TTBB or SATB choirs accompanied by piccolo and bodhran. (The piccolo part can also be played by a fife, violin or fiddle.)

The first three verses are traditional; the last three were written by the composer, including a nod to the fabled treasure on Oak Island.

Haul Away, Joe” performed by the Hillview Cottage Pirate Chorus with Cantámus Vocaloids, and Robin Tufts playing the bodhran.
