OCTOBER
I felt very fortunate to participate in the “Rocky Mountain Choral Leadership” retreat at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, hosted by Choir Alberta. Participants from across Alberta made this an outstanding conference!
“The Gathering Storm” is an evocative poem by T. E. Bryan, describing powerful images of a storm brewing and building before unleashing its full power. This setting is for SATB choir with piano. I’m currently looking for a choir that would like to give the World Premiere performance!
SEPTEMBER
“Orchestral” Fantasy for unaccompanied SATB choir is now available for purchase. Imagine, just for a day, that your choir members could use their voices to perform like symphonic instruments! Sopranos could sing like flutes, oboes, trumpets and violins; altos could take over for the clarinets, cor anglais and violas; tenors would take on the challenges faced by bassoons, French horns, trombones and ‘cellos; and basses could give the tubas, timpani and double basses the day off!

March
Back in the year 2005 I recorded a solo album called “On Being Human“. This included a song called “Trouble!“, about a femme fatale I knew when I was a young man. I’ve just finished writing a new version for TTBB choir, with a twist; the subject is a man who causes havoc with everyone around him! It’s a fun, jazzy take on the perils of relationships, rumours and romance.

Here’s the world premiere of “Pentagonal Dance” for harp, performed by Danielle Kuntz. This is a challenging piece for an accomplished harpist, in 5/4 time with multiple pedal changes. Keep an eye on the “pedal cam” in the bottom left corner of the screen. Kudos and many thanks to Danielle for an outstanding performance!

In keeping with New Years celebrations, here is a brand new setting of my “Fanfare for the New Year” for unaccompanied choir. The audio rendition was created using “Dreamtonics voices”, programmed by me.
Next step: recruit a real choir to perform it!

“The Post-Christmas Blues” is now availble for unaccompanied SATB choir. The lyrics bemoan Christmas consumerism, then propose the idea of carrying the Christmas spirit throughout the year! The original version for SATB choir with jazz piano is still available. The new, unaccompanied version provides a worthy challenge at a medium to advanced level of difficulty.
November 1st, 2024
“Shaping the Invisible” is a brand new work for advanced SATB choir with piano. The lyrics are based on a short idea proposed by Leonardo da Vinci; that music is “figurazione delle cose invisibili” or “the shaping of the invisible”.

“Mon Parapluie” is a cute little song about a child who is a bit too proud of their beautiful umbrella. French music teacher Claire Champagne says, “It’s well written and well crafted! I love the melody!”

LEARNING TO USE DORICO – SHARING MY NOTES
Musicians around the world were caught off guard when the makers of Finale music-writing software suddenly announced that they were ceasing production at the end of August. I’ve used Finale since around 2003/4 to typeset all my compositions. It will continue to work until the computer dies or an operating system upgrade creates a conflict, and Finale stops working.
Dorico is the new, recommended music typesetting software, created by a group of programmers who left the Finale team a few years ago. So, a new learning adventure has begun for composers and musicians who are starting to make the transition.
As I learn, I’m creating a set of Alphabetical, Quick-Reference notes. Because we’re all in this together, I’ve decided to share my notes with anyone who wants to use them. The notes are being updated frequently as I learn new things, so rather than printing them out and going through a lot of paper, you might want to bookmark the link, and use the latest version each time you use Dorico.
Feel free to share the link with anyone who might find them useful.

As soon as I saw Dorothea Taylor‘s “Sink-opation” video, it made me want to play along. I challenged myself to create three improvisations in very different musical styles over Dorothea’s drumming. (These are off-the-cuff, not polished performances.) She graciously gave me permission to post the results online:

My heartfelt thanks go to Morag Northey (cellist), Matthew Kallio (pianist), Cass, and all the members of the Calgary Men’s Chorus for their outstanding performances!

“The Commanded Heart” is now available for TTBB choir with soloists, piano and ‘cello. I’m celebrating the 10th anniversary of two albums I released in 2014!
If you only listen to serious classical and choral music, this post is not for you. But if your musical horizons are more broad and varied, you’re invited to explore the link below.
Friday, May 3rd is “Bandcamp Friday” – a day when 100% of the proceeds go to the musicians who post their music on Bandcamp. I currently have six albums represented, and will be posting more in the next couple of months.
Even though I’m a classically trained musician, much of my youth was spent playing keyboards for pop, rock, jazz and blues bands, both onstage and in various recording studios. And even as I developed my skills as a serious composer, I also devoted time in my home studio creating new, non-classical music.
Different albums explore hard-driving synth rock, angst-filled songs about love and loss, soundtracks for movies, and peaceful, easy listening.
Are you looking for some new tunes for spring and summer listening? You’re invited to explore:

Today is filled with a sense of accomplishment! Yesterday I wrote the last note of “In Colour” (for 12-piece musical theatre-style ensemble), and sent the score and parts off to the ensemble that inspired me to write it. Today I finished mixing the demo recording and posted it on my website.
The lyrics are about growing up in a world where things were right or wrong, black or white. Yet, as I grew up, I gradually realized that life is much more rich and varied than I had been led to believe. The chorus poses the question:
“Why would you live your life in black and white, when the world around us is in colour?”
If you’re a purist and want to wait for the premiere performance, you could be waiting a while! And if you just can’t wait, you can click the link to hear the computer-generated demo featuring my favourite two Cantāmus Vocaloids.
Special thanks go to 94 Take the Cake for permission to use their bakery/cafe in Okotoks, AB for a photo shoot!
January 30th, 2024

Inspired by my time with the Ottawa Mennonite Church choir two weeks ago, I have just finished writing “Let All That You Do Be Done in Love“. The score is at the printers, and will be sent to the choir as soon as it’s ready!
October 22nd, 2023
I just returned home from a few days in Ottawa. There, I had the opportunity to sit in on a rehearsal with the Ottawa Mennonite Church choir, under the baton of Eric Rupp. I thoroughly enjoyed singing with the bass section, putting my sight-reading skills to the test. My thanks go to Eric and all of the members of the choir who made me feel so welcome!
October 2023
I attended the “Orchestral Harp Excerpts” workshop by harpist Danielle Kuntz. Twelve lucky composers had the opportunity to have a guided, in-depth look at excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire. Some composers wrote well for the harp, based on a clear understanding of what’s playable, and how to achieve a balanced sound with the orchestra. Danielle offered a number of useful tips for contemporary composers to write well for the harp!
September 29th, 2023
I attended the “Face to Face Conference” for the Okotoks Fine Arts community. It is encouraging to see the depth and breadth of experience that was represented there, along with the passion and commitment as we plan to support and develop Fine Arts programs in Okotoks.

Cypress Choral Music is publishing my SSATB version of “Three Haiku“!
You are invited to see and hear the score: https://cypresschoral.com/composers/d-geoffrey-bell/three-haiku/

July 2023
CHALLENGE: How can a composer demonstrate a new piece of choral music when it hasn’t been performed by a choir yet? Until recently, music software provided us with synthesized voices that could only sing “oo” and “ah”. (Listen to “Three Haiku” on the Audio Samples page as an example.)
2023 SOLUTION: send the score to an AI choir, and receive the resulting rendition in less than an hour! It can’t replace a choir of real-live humans, but the performance is surprisingly accurate much of the time. Listen to “Alone / Together” or “Dancing Beneath the Stars” on the Audio Samples page to hear the Cantāmus Vocaloid rendition!
June 19th, 2023
“Come With Me to the Sea” is now officially published by Cypress Choral Music. You can view the score and hear a recording of the world premier here.

It makes me happy to share my music with the world!

January 2022 – Art/Sound Installation at Loft 112
What an interesting concept! The “Boxed Stories Gallery” is a new exhibit at Loft112 art gallery in downtown Calgary. Each drawer contains a small art installation by a different artist.
It was a delight to collaborate with my sister, Jackie Bell, an artist and story-teller! Jackie created the story and illustrations and narrated the story. My job was to figure out how to create a soundtrack with narration, music, and a few sound effects to fit inside the drawer!
The exhibit is open to the public from January to June 2022. Details can be found at: https://www.loft112.org/

December 2021
I’m working on my current commissioned project, “Covid Corvid vs. Riles & Me“, using digitally sampled instruments and environmental sounds.

October 2021
I’m happy to update my status with the Canadian League of Composers from Professional Member to Emeritus Member! (Even though this reflects the number of years I’ve been a Professional Member along with reaching a certain age milestone, it still feels like an accomplishment!)
August 2021
What’s this? Composing music for a TV series? Have I abandoned composing “serious” choral and instrumental music? All is not as it seems.
DC Entertainment and Spitfire Audio put out an open call for composers to reimagine the musical soundtrack for a specific clip from “Stargirl”. I have always been interested in learning more about composing cinematic soundtracks. Strong compositional skills are required, along with an additional set of skills; the ability to create musical moments that tie in precisely with the timing and emotional content of scenes on the screen; a solid understanding of the software used to create music digitally; and the ability to integrate the new music with the visual story.
This was a learning opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I pushed myself to learn some new skills and some new software. I enjoyed working on the challenge, and am happy with the result.
So, for your entertainment and amusement, I invite you to listen to the score I created for the Stargirl segment. DC Entertainment and Spitfire Audio will be adjudicating submissions from all composers, and awarding prizes to the top four. And of course, you’re invited to click SUBSCRIBE on my YouTube channel to be notified when I post my next video!

June 2021 – I am honoured to be commissioned by Unison Choruses Canada to create a new work for TTBB choir. The lyrics explore the “LGBT purge” by the Canadian government and military in the 20th century. This is the first in a series of two articles. The second one, scheduled to be published later this year, is a set of interviews with five established mid-career Canadian choral composers.

March 2021 – The “Haul Away Joe” sea shanty project attracted 90 tenors and basses from around the world! Singers practiced and recorded their parts at home, which were then assembled into one recording. The results were rough and ready, but we all had fun!
