“Orchestral” Fantasy

(for unaccompanied SATB choir!)

Imagine, just for a day, that your choir members could use their voices to perform like symphonic instruments! Sopranos could sing like flutes, oboes, trumpets and violins; altos could take over for the clarinets, cor anglais and violas; tenors would take on the challenges faced by bassoons, French horns, trombones and ‘cellos; and basses could give the tubas, timpani and double basses the day off!

Take your choir and audience on a fantastic voyage through the spirit of musical transformation, having some fun along the way.

Choir members don’t need to try to copy the exact sounds of different instruments. Just imagine your voice singing the parts of the instruments, using the nonsense syllables as guides to:

  • note attack
  • vowel sounds (to provide a consistent timbre)
  • a soft or crisp release on the final consonants.

“Vocal percussion” parts can do their best to sound like a bass drum, (a deep bass “boooom!”); a snare drum, (a crisp “rat-a-tat tat”); and a crash cymbal, (“craaashshshshsh…”).

Remember that the intent is to have fun making new sounds. This piece will challenge your choir’s skills while letting their imaginations soar!
“Orchestral Fantasy” will delight your audience, either as a concert opener, or as a showpiece to close the concert.
